Never have time for breakfast in the morning? The traffic is always congested, and you barely have time to get to work and make everyone believe you’ve had a good night’s sleep?
When we were all kids, staying up late and waking up at 2 PM was the dream. However, now that science has shown us all the benefits of waking up early, binging on TV shows until 4 AM seems like a HUGE mistake.
There’s a reason people say “rise and shine” — those who love the peace and quiet of early morning shine in most aspects of life. Even better, they get to experience life to the fullest and not live like a vampire. For the most part, they even have human contact during the day, which isn’t something we’d say for night owls.
Now, I know what you might be thinking — it’s tempting to stay up late. I was like you too once, mostly because I had a huge fear of missing out on things. Every night, I’d hit the social media so that I could see everything I missed during the day, while I was mostly sleepy and just barely trying to go through the workday.
But, things change, and now, I’m adulting hard. That means I make it a point to get at least seven hours of sleep each day — and here’s why you should consider doing the same as well.

#1. More time in the day
Let’s start with one of the most obvious benefits of waking up early — there’s more time in the day to do stuff when you don’t sleep in. Think about it for a second.
Most of the time, when we sleep in, it seems as if the rest of the day is already ruined.
There’s no time to eat three meals a day, so there goes our health. There isn’t time to calmly drink our coffee, so our sanity is in jeopardy too. More importantly, there’s no time to shower, which means we would stink all day.
In the end, when there’s enough light outside, time goes a bit faster, and it’s easier to have fun and do things. At nighttime, however, it gets quite depressing, and our bodies are shutting down by the minute. So why not just get a good night’s rest instead of torturing ourselves?
#2. Silence — absolute silence
One of the greatest benefits of waking up early is the chance to enjoy ourselves in complete and utter silence. That’s exactly why I love it and would never want to get back to my nighttime endeavors.
Silence is something I don’t get at work or outside, which means all sorts of noises frequently violate my sense of hearing. That gets to me; it makes me anxious and puts me on edge.
However, in the morning, even if you live with someone, there’s a good chance you won’t wake up at the same time. So, you can take your coffee and slowly sip it while enjoying hearing only your thoughts.
#3. More time to eat!
On a similar note, waking up early also means there’s time to eat breakfast.
Now, back when I was a night owl, eating breakfast was a sure sign I was becoming an adult.
That was my worst fear — being an adult would mean more responsibility. So, to fight it off, I acted like a teenager and binge-watched shows until the early hours in the morning. Take that, adulthood!
Still, my bad habits caught up with me over time, and at some point, I decided enough was enough. There’s no running away from breakfast if I want to keep my health. So, by waking up early, I allow myself to indulge a bit.
I make myself a nice bowl of oatmeal, jazz it all up for Instagram, and I feel good about myself. In essence, waking up early doesn’t give me any excuses NOT to take care of myself — which, as it turns out, makes me rather happy.
#4. Mornings are always more productive than nights
Given that by waking up early, I have enough time to eat my breakfast in peace and take a nice shower, it’s no wonder I feel much more productive for the rest of the day.
You see, in the early morning, right before no one has woken up, I can think clearly. I can write down my goals for the day, everything I need to do, and then just do it. How?
Well, I have far more energy with some food in my belly and from drinking coffee without having to talk to someone. What’s more, the sheer idea of having 5+ more hours during the day motivates me to get things done. The alertness I get from waking up early helps me tackle challenges with ease!
#5. It’s easier to wake up
One of the most useful benefits of waking up early is the fact that I no longer feel drowsy for the rest of the day.
Back when I was a full-time night owl, I always felt as if sleep wasn’t helping me at all. For one, I couldn’t sleep so much each day, purely because life goes on, whether or not I stay up watching Sex & the City reruns. So, usually, I was severely sleep-deprived, which made sleep inertia a real problem.
Sleep inertia is the time that takes us to wake up in the morning, and unfortunately, it leads to fogginess if we’re sleep-deprived.
The less I slept, the comfier my bed felt in the morning. However, that also meant I was missing out on a lot of things, like breakfast. More importantly, it meant it always took about an hour to start thinking clearly, which was a total waste of time.
Now, it takes me about 10 minutes to wake up and start my day — and it feels incredible!
#6. No more restless nights and a lot less stress
One of the best ways to combat stress is to fix your sleep schedule.
I cannot even explain to you all the stress I was under from always being in a hurry right before work. There was never enough time to do anything, let alone wake up properly. So, I was on edge and had to drink at least two cups of coffee to get my head straight.
Another thing I noticed when I started going to bed on time is that I felt rested in the morning. Those eight hours of sleep at night are completely different from sleeping eight hours during the day.
When everything around us is dark, the body naturally shuts down to replenish itself. But that doesn’t happen easily during the day, so I never actually felt like I had a good night’s sleep. I was basically living on borrowed time until I would pass out when I wasn’t able to fight sleep anymore.
#7. Losing weight becomes easier
Finally, one of the most incredible benefits of waking up early was the fact I was able to lose some weight.
I struggled with weight all my life, purely because food is one of my best friends. I’ll admit it — I’m a huge foodie that loves enjoying new flavors and trying new dishes. But, over time, the pounds piled up, and given that I wasn’t sleeping well, I was always too tired to work out.
Today, though, I have enough time to get in a workout right before work and maintain my weight loss. What’s more, I got into intermittent fasting, which helped me out a lot.
Granted, most fasting plans encourage skipping breakfast, but I don’t do that. Instead, I work out on an empty stomach because that way, I’m burning the fat I already have. Even better, since I’m not so full because I haven’t yet eaten, it sort of feels like my body is lighter and stronger.
Of course, I pace myself, as you should too. But, the point is — I couldn’t do that before. Sleep deprivation meant I was already exhausted, and I didn’t want to make myself feel worse!

Experts have always maintained the idea that an adult needs at least seven or eight hours of sleep each night to function properly. Now, after transforming myself into an early bird, I feel healthier and stronger. My mind works faster, and I don’t ever feel like I’m about to burn out.
So, if you’re afraid of taking a leap of faith and becoming a morning person — don’t be. It will change your life in more ways than one, and it will help you live a longer, happier life.
The only thing I would suggest is that you start slowly. Don’t just go from sleeping until 2 PM to waking up at 7 AM.
The transition won’t be that easy, and you’ll feel worse than how you feel now. So, give yourself time to adjust by going half an hour or an hour earlier to bed each day. After some time, it will become second nature to you!
