What to Expect During a Chiropractic Visit

If you have back pain, neck pain, work or sports-related injuries, or chronic headaches, you may have considered going to a chiropractor. You might have been hesitant because you didn’t know what to expect during a chiropractic visit.

People have been getting chiropractic adjustments ever since Daniel David Palmer performed the first chiropractic adjustment in 1895. It has many health benefits and is a practice that has evolved over the years to incorporate several different tools and methods of adjustment. When you go for a chiropractic visit, there are a few basic steps to expect.

The Consultation

Before an adjustment, you will have a consultation with the office. In some cases, this will take place on the day of your first adjustment. They will take your vital statistics and ask about your medical history and questions about your pain, such as:

  • The location of the pain
  • How long you have experienced the pain
  • Other symptoms you have experienced

The technician you speak to will explain the types of adjustments that are available to you. They will recommend which type of adjustment they think is right for you.

The Problems People See Chiropractors For

Chiropractors primarily focus on back and neck pain. The practice focuses on the musculoskeletal system and is based on the idea that problems with the spine and joints can affect your overall health.

People with sore muscles and painful joints often receive treatment from a chiropractor. It is also thought to cure headaches because the spine is directly connected to the brain.

The Adjustment

During chiropractic treatment, you will lie on a table while the doctor manipulates your spine with their hands or a tool. There are several different techniques, tables, and thrust levels they may use.

The most traditional chiropractic methods involve the chiropractor manipulating the spine and joints with their hands. If you get this type of adjustment, you will hear a crack or two as the chiropractor works. Although it may sound alarming, none of your bones are being cracked. The noise is produced when gas leaves the joint capsule. Joints are taken beyond the range they normally move during an adjustment. This causes pressure on the joint capsule that makes it release gas.

Thompson Table Adjustment

Depending on your needs, the chiropractor may use the Thompson Technique for your adjustment. This technique uses high-speed, low-pressure spinal manipulation to treat patients.

The technique is used in conjunction with the Thompson Table. The table elevates the area of the body that the chiropractor will adjust. The chiropractor gives a thrust just as the table drops. You will not hear cracking during this type of adjustment.

Instruments for Adjustments

An even milder form of chiropractic adjustment involves using a handheld tool that clicks the vertebrae in place. You will feel a short, painless click on several areas along your spine. It is the most gentle of chiropractic treatments.

How Long Will It Take?

The average chiropractic adjustment takes around 15 to 45 minutes. Many chiropractors offer lunchtime sessions to make things more convenient for their clients.

Is It Going to Hurt?

Most people feel no pain after a chiropractic session. You may be a bit sore after your first chiropractic treatment, but the soreness will go away in a day or two.

Lying on a table while a stranger manipulates your spine can make you feel uncomfortable, and the doctor may pull on your limbs or press on your spine in a way that feels a little strange. Most people find that it does not actually hurt.

What Kind of Training Does a Chiropractor Have?

Some people will tell you that a chiropractor is not a real doctor and that you should not trust them. Although a chiropractor cannot prescribe drugs, they undergo many years of training.

To become a chiropractor, a person must earn a D.C. degree. Once they have this degree, they will have to obtain a license after they get their degree.

A typical program takes four years to complete and is considered a graduate-level degree. People accepted into chiropractic school normally have bachelor’s degrees in biology or physiology.

A person studying for a D.C. degree will take basic science classes and learn every bone in the human body. They will also have lab training that offers hands-on experience.

Chiropractic care does not work for everyone, but it is worth a try. When a person has neck or back pain, they are often prescribed painkillers. These painkillers are often addictive and can have side effects. Alternative treatments can make you feel better without the use of chemicals.

In most cases, doctors and chiropractors will work together to heal a patient holistically. A combination of medical care and chiropractic treatment can make you feel better quickly.
